The Cost of Standards

Most people imagine compromise as a dramatic moment. In reality, it rarely arrives that way.
It begins with small decisions we quietly justify. One missed promise. One excuse that feels reasonable. One standard lowered because "this time is different." None of them seem important on their own.
Character isn't usually lost through one defining failure. It's shaped by the habits we repeat when nobody is paying attention. The standard you accept today becomes the standard you'll defend tomorrow.
That's why discipline matters. Not because perfection is possible, but because consistency is.
The difficult part isn't recognising a poor standard in someone else. It's recognising the moment we begin lowering our own.
